- W606731007 abstract "Accident frequency at puffin crossings was compared with that at pelican crossings and far-side pedestrian signals by examining sites in the UK at which crossings had been upgraded. The main advantages of puffin crossings include: nearside pedestrian signals; no flashing pedestrian phase or pedestrian signal blackout period at junctions; on-crossing pedestrian detectors which provide an extension to the crossing time if required; no lashing amber traffic signal phase at mid-block crossings; and pedestrian kerbside detectors to cancel the pedestrian phase if there is no demand. Previous studies of behaviour at puffin crossings are reviewed. In the current study, 72 sites were assessed, many in or around London and Manchester. A notable finding was that there was a large number of sites where the cancel facility was not working although the kerbside detection appeared functional. At 79% of sites, all installed pedestrian detection was functional. Generally there was complete on-crossing detector coverage of the crossing. Site layout generally conformed to the good practice guide. Accident analysis was carried out at 50 sites during 1994-2007, with three years of before data. Conversion to puffin crossings reduced all accidents by 19%. Junction accidents showed a large decrease in injury accident frequency of 26% for all accidents and 38% for pedestrian accidents but the small size of the sample prevented the achievement of statistical significance. It was noted that junction performance could be improved by setting the cancel detectors to operate where there is no demand. Better education of pedestrians regarding on-crossing detection might alleviate concerns about not being bale to see the pedestrian signal while crossing." @default.
