- W606797417 abstract "The wet and dry skidding resistance of newly laid stone mastic asphalt surfacings, including thin surfacings, was investigated on motorways and trunk roads. A pavement friction tester (PFT) was used to make measurements of wet and dry locked-wheel friction at speeds ranging from 20 to 120km/h. The sideway-force coefficient routine investigation machine (SCRIM) was also used to make supporting low speed wet skid resistance measurements. On wet roads, friction decreased as speed increased, with the greatest loss of friction occurring between 20 and 50km/h on new thin surfacings. The thicker binder film on the newly laid surfacing masked the microtexture on the new surfacings. The effect of speed on thin surfacing materials in the first eighteen moths of their lives is broadly consistent with expected behaviour on older surfaces, but on very new surfaces, there may be situations where friction levels at intermediate and higher speeds are lower than might be expected for a typical asphalt road. Where measured, surface texture depths were above levels that might be considered to have a marked adverse effect on high-speed wet skid resistance. In the first 6 months, friction levels were lowest in PFT tests at intermediate (50km/h) and higher speeds (>60km/h) at low traffic levels. Dry road friction decreased with increasing speed up to about 50km/h and loss of microtexture from the traffic polishing action was observed over an 18-month period. Dry friction in early life was generally lower than would be expected from a normal, trafficked, dry road. High traffic sites reached higher friction levels more quickly than low trafficked sites. The implications for accident risk were considered likely to be important when cornering or negotiating a bend or when braking hard in an emergency.
