- W60710725 abstract "This chapter presents evidence for extensive physiologic degeneration of adrenergic nerves in the human myometrium during pregnancy. The human uterus is well supplied with adrenergic nerves, which are located both around blood vessels and in close association with the bundles of smooth muscle cells. The uterine adrenergic transmitter in many animal species is dramatically reduced during pregnancy, leading to a functional denervation near term. The adrenergic innervation of the isthmic myometrium during nonpregnant and pregnant conditions is analyzed by fluorescence histochemistry for demonstration of adrenergic nerves and by quantitative measurements of norepinephrine and its synthesizing enzymes—tyrosine hydroxylase and DOPA decarboxylase. Transmural electrical stimulation of the adrenergic nerves in isolated myometrial strips in vitro induces a contractile response in material from nonpregnant women. At term pregnancy, there is a severalfold increased sensitivity to exogenous norepinephrine compared to nonpregnancy. The adrenergic nerves in the human uterus, like those in the uterine horns of laboratory animals, undergo fundamental changes in the course of pregnancy." @default.
