- W607481572 abstract "There are four language skills in teaching English. They are listening, reading, writing and speaking, but in teaching learning process the students of SMP 1 Jati Kudus felt bored to join in speaking class. The reason is because the teacher always uses repeating and drilling (R&D) technique, conversation and dialogue in order to make them enjoy and speak English in speaking class, but the students are still afraid to speak up in front of the class easily. On this condition, the writer tries to use Milling Activities as the technique to teach speaking.This research has a purpose to find out the answer from the statement of the problem. The purpose is to find out whether or not there is a significant difference between the speaking ability of the seventh grade students of SMP 1 Jati Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught through Milling Activities.This is a quantitative research. The method of the research is experimental. This design of the research is the experimental method which uses pretest and posttest. The population is the seventh grade students of SMP 1 Jati Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012. The total number of the population is 238 students. They are grouped into seven classes. The sample is taken one class from the population by using cluster random sampling through lottery. The data were taken from the spoken test. After the students were given the pretest, they were given the treatment for four meeting. The giving of the treatment relies on the material that taken from the syllabus of the school. Then, the data were analyzed using the t-test method to find out whether or not there is a significant difference between the speaking ability of the seventh grade students of SMP 1 Jati Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught through Milling Activities. The result of the research, the mean of pretest is 71.17 and the mean of posttest is 80. It can be concluded that the t-observation 28.92 in the level of significance = 0.05 and the degree of freedom (df) 34 which is gained from N-1, the t-table is 2.04. Thus, H0 is denied and Ha is confirmed. So, the hypothesis states, “There is a significant difference between the speaking ability of the seventh grade of SMP 1 Jati Kudus in the academic year 2011/2012 before and after being taught through Milling Activities” is confirmed.Because the use of Milling Activities in teaching speaking shows good results, the English teacher of Junior High School may use the technique of Milling Activities to teach English on the other skills. In fact, Milling Activities technique can motivate the students to speak easily." @default.
