- W607533606 abstract "The paper is intended to stimulate discussion and encourage engineers to adopt a more numerate and questionning approach to established practices and reviews the current state of knowledge existing in the construction and maintenance of highways. There should be an integrated approach to plant, materials, traffic and a better knowledge of the effect of these on pavement life. Judgements should be based on the use of machines, such as the deflectograph in an approach based on adequate training, a successful surfacing policy and a sound knowledge of the properties of materials used. A surfacing policy should consider strengthening capabilities, skid resistance properties, the expected life, riding quality as well as initial and annual cost of treatments. Insufficient emphasis is given to temperature control in the storing of binders, mixing transporting and laying of bituminous materials. The selection of binders and the selection of correct nominal sizes and control of specified thicknesses play an important role in the strength of the pavement and its life. Considerable benefits are available at little extra cost by the control of temperature, more efficient compaction and accurate compliance with specification. (TRRL)" @default.
