- W607637260 abstract "This paper will present how pavement deterioration models are important inputs for the pavement management systems (PMS). These models are based on the study of performance data, and they provide the evolution law of pavement deterioration. Performance data consist of observations of the condition of pavement sections, which are collected through several follow-up campaigns on road networks. In order to characterize the pavement deterioration process, the LCPC (French Public Works Research Laboratory) has been working on developing statistical modeling methods. The most used is based on a parametric approach (Weibull model) for survival data and require the introduction of a strong mechanical hypothesis called “robustness”. In this survival data analysis method (SDAM), the robustness is considered as a state indicator specific to each section and is used to take into account unobserved covariates and to individualize the evolution of a given road section. The two main shortcomings associated with this model are: the hypothesis of robustness: each pavement section is supposed to have its own robustness considered to be constant over its whole lifetime. In other words, a pavement section more degraded at a given instant than another section will ever remain as such; observations on a given road section are supposed to be independent. This hypothesis may lead to biased estimations of parameters. To overcome these shortcomings, we propose to introduce a logistic mixed model (LMM). The random effects of this model allow to take into account the correlation between observations on the same pavement section and consequently to reduce bias of the estimations. Moreover, they are useful to classify the pavement sections according to their performance. A comparison between SDAM model with robustness hypothesis and LMM model is carried out, in order to investigate differences in terms of estimation and prediction of the road sections performance. This comparison, based on fatigue cracking data, highlights the need to introduce random effects in the deterioration process.and have a maximum of 10 pages." @default.
