- W607706630 abstract "It is well understood that most traffic accidents are caused by drivers' errors. Therefore, collision warning systems to prevent drivers' errors are considered to be a potential countermeasure against such accidents. However, although to realize an effective collision warning system, drivers' responses and behavioral changes while using such systems need to be studied carefully, the effect of such systems on drivers' response has not been proved sufficiently. Because such experiments are difficult to conduct in the real world, driving simulators are expected to be an essential testing method for such studies. As accurate motion feedbacks to the driver would be necessary to reproduce such drivers' emergent braking, a driving simulator which had a large motion system was exploited. First, it was validated that the driving simulator with a large longitudinal stroke is effective to reproduce driver's realistic braking behaviors. Next, to estimate the effect of the collision warning system, a simulator experiment was conducted. In the experiment, subjects were given a secondary task to look out of the preceding car. While executing the tasks, the preceding car decelerated suddenly. Forty-five young male subjects participated in the test. Braking reaction times with and without collision warnings were analyzed. It was found that the average response time of braking was substantially decreased with collision warnings and the frequency of simulated collisions was also reduced significantly." @default.
