- W60843886 abstract "This chapter focuses on indications for extracranial–intracranial anastomosis. Patients who are experiencing transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), occlusion of carotid artery does not always cause a stroke and is usually followed by cessation of TIAs. Occlusion of the internal carotid artery with or without a complete stroke does not provide a strong indication for bypass surgery. The facts that neurons have potential to recover from ischemia of considerable duration and extracranial–intracranial anastomosis does restore the flow of blood through cerebral arteries and provides a basis to explore the possible benefit of bypass surgery in carefully selected cases of complete stroke. Angiography does not reveal occlusion or stenosis of major vessels as the cause of the reduced cerebral blood flow." @default.
