- W608468324 abstract "A study of the potential use of the Marshall Test in design and evaluation of bituminous concrete mixes for pavements was conducted. Two sources of aggregates that were being used in production of bituminous concrete in Massachusetts were used in the study. Marshall tests were conducted using job mixes for which relatively low values of stability had been previously reported. Marshall tests with a different job-mix formula were conducted using a wide range of asphalt contents and different compaction efforts in order to establish a complete set of test properties and the effect of compaction level on test results. Triaxial compression tests were conducted on samples of the two aggregate sources, for both the fine fraction of the aggregate and the complete job mix combination of the aggregate, untreated with asphalt, to compare the stress-strain strength behavior of the different aggregate materials. These tests were run on bituminous concrete samples using Ashland aggregates in order to evaluate the basic strength parameters of the mix and to make a qualitative comparison of Marshall stabilities to triaxial test results. The Marshall tests did not reproduce low values of Marshall stabilities previously reported. Differences in mineral composition of the aggregates were not a cause of differences in stabilities. An evaluation was made on the various methods of determining the air voids content of the bituminous concrete mix. Recommendations are given on the selection of compaction effort to be used to prepare samples for Marshall tests. The results of triaxial tests on bituminous concrete mixes indicated that the test is not sensitive enough for use in the selection of asphalt contents for the design of bituminous concrete mixes. Overall, large values of variability of Marshall test results were found within individual batches and within series of tests. These appear to make the test inadequate for its use as an acceptance criterion of bituminous concrete mixes. Recommendations are made to evaluate quantitatively the repeatability of the Marshall test for the particular laboratory, operators, and aggregate in use, by statistical methods of analysis." @default.
