- W608703417 abstract "This article presents excerpts from the joint Special Report from the National Asphalt Pavement Association and the Federal Highway Administration entitled, Construction Guidelines. The construction practices recommended for Superpave designed mixtures are very similar to those practices used for conventional mixes. However, a number of construction problems do exist that are unique to coarse-graded mixtures or that are magnified by the use of Superpave. The primary mixture changes that are typically observed with Superpave are coarse-graded mixtures, more angular aggregate, and the use of more modifiers. It is important that good construction practices be used in the placement of Superpave mixtures to minimize segregation and to ensure a uniform nonsegregated layer of hot mix asphalt (HMA) is placed. When compacting HMA mixtures, including Superpave, the ability to compact the mixture is related to the total fluids content. A method must be used to seal the porous cores before an accurate density measurement can be obtained. Prior to the start of every Superpave project, a test strip should be placed to verify that mixture volumetrics are satisfactory and to evaluate placement and compaction techniques. In the past, the most common rule of thumb for lift thickness was 2 to 1, but with Superpave this ratio should be 3 to 1. Operators need to be trained in good rolling practices for Superpave mixtures, as rolling may need to be adjusted based on mat response. On some Superpave mixtures, a tender zone has been identified in temperature ranges of 200-240 deg F (93.3-115.5 deg C), where the mixture cannot be adequately compacted.
