- W608896892 abstract "Automatic transmissions utilised by gmh at present ensure that gmh passenger vehicles offer improved fuel economy with maximised vehicle performance. The acknowledged methods of achieving these dual goals are as follows: 1) utilise wide ratio spread with conventional 3 speed designs. This enables good performance in lower ratios and economy in the highest ratio. 2) Utilise 4 forward ratios in preference to 3 or 2 to enable engine operation within the optimum range for fuel consumption/ power output, again achieving performance/ economy goals. 3) Utilise electronic control systems to provide greater flexibility concerning all parameters involved. Electronic controls permit more precision on shift pattern and therefore engine operation, as above. Electronic controls also enable continuous modulation of friction elements during a shift to provide improvements in both friction element durability and pleasing the customer. Overseas gm developments specifically related to passenger car automatic transmissions are reviewed. The major developments are: 1) integration of electronics; 2) viscous torque converter clutches; and 3) continuously variable transmission (cvt) which integrates the desired features: wide ratio coverage; infinite ratio range between underdrive and overdrive; sophisticated electronic control systems; mechanically simple because the belt system is ideal for the 2 axis front wheel drive requirement." @default.
