- W609441693 abstract "There have been major efforts in the last 10 years to improve the crashworthiness of rail passenger vehicles, especially in Europe with the French TGV and the British Networker multiple unit commuter train. Both of these trains have crush zones at the ends of each car. In a collision, these crush zones are designed to absorb some of the energy and to collapse in a controlled manner. While there are a number of organizations capable of carrying out theoretical studies on impact tests, full scale testing capabilities have not been available in North America until now. The article discusses the construction of a barrier at the Transportation Technology Center, Pueblo, CO, which will enable TTCI customers to carry out impact tests on complete passenger cars, or on components such as couplers and passenger car seat mountings. The purpose of the full scale test is to show that the car body meets the requirements of specification which is to absorb 1.02 MJ of energy, and to verify the crashworthiness analyses of the car body structure." @default.
