- W609522914 abstract "A general decrease of the speed from 50 to 30 km/h on local streets using speed control measures could theoretically decrease the number of people in Sweden exposed to A-weighted equivalent continuous sound pressure levels between 61 and 65 dB from 350 000 to 180 000. The corresponding figures for the interval 56-60 dB are 565 000 and 370 000 respectively. It has then been assumed that 80 per cent of the present streets within the lowest interval and 60 per cent within the highest have been rebuilt to yield a fairly smooth traffic flow and that the number of heavy vehicles is small. The noisiest streets remain unchanged as major roads will not be affected by speed control measures. The basis of this investigation has been a literature review and a limited number of own measurements on single vehicles. The literature has shown that correctly implemented speed control measures will lower the noise level. The decrease will strongly depend on the driving pattern obtained after the measures. The decrease will become lower if the speed control devices encourage aggressive driving. It is also necessary to avoid the introduction of more noisy road pavements. Typically the average sound pressure level will decrease 3-4 dB for passenger cars and 0-2 dB for trucks and buses. The average maximum sound pressure level will, as a rule, decrease about 2 dB more.
