- W609555855 abstract "The finite element method has often been used to simulate excavation. When the soil is linearly elastic, the results of excavation should be independent of the number of stages in the excavation process, however, this does not always occur. A simple direct method by means of which this independence can be achieved is presented in this paper. It is important that errors which increase with the number of stages in the excavation should be avoided, so that multi-stage excavation for non-linear problems, can be used without excessive errors. The errors arising from the inability of the elements to model adequately the stress gradients near the toe of the excavation, the effects of reduced integration, and excavation adjacent to a diaphragm wall are discussed.
