- W609665220 abstract "This article describes the new James River Bridge, which is part of the 8.8-mile-long Pocahontas Parkway. The 675-foot clear span over the river is the third longest cast-in-place cantilever construction in the U.S. The main span foundations consist of blade-type pier shafts supported by eight-foot-diameter drilled shafts. The piers adjacent to the river are of a twin-blade design, and blade-type columns incorporate multiple cylindrical rebar cages to provide for confinement during an earthquake. The project is located in a Category B seismic zone, which required incorporating into the design of the bridge a variety of considerations. Some of these included: 1) except for the end spans, the continuous spans of the river crossing are fixed to the piers, thus allowing for more uniform distribution of longitudinal forces; 2) the continuous spans of the approach structures are pinned to the piers, allowing for better distribution of seismic forces; 3) single-column cylindrical piers were used in the approach structure, leading to substantial reduction in seismic forces and more economical foundations and piers; 4) A three-dimensional seismic model was used in the response spectrum analysis, thus helping in the selection of appropriate sizes for structural members; and, 5) seismic-rated bar couplers were used, reducing problems for fabrication and transportation." @default.
