- W609709320 abstract "Every year, about 1,000 cyclists are killed in street accidents in the Federal republic of Germany, and as many as 2,000 are seriously injured. Most of these accidents happen in urban areas. The trends of the previous years indicate that accident figures might increase in future. It seems obvious that the growing accident rates in urban areas cannot be explained by the increasing number of cyclists alone. It seems much more likely that the reason can be found in the fact that in the past, car traffic took unquestioned priority in urban areas, whereas the demands of cyclists were increasingly neglected . In order to reduce these deficits, many German cities have increased their efforts to work out safe and attractive cycle track networks. The aim of this paper is to point out important features of accidents with cyclists by a detailed analysis of accident data. In this way, it offers planning boards effective help in assessing and designing alternatives of street and cycle track networks. The analysis of traffic accidents in Munich in which cyclists were involved provides important parameters of cycling accidents and points out their respective interactions. The results of the analysis can be used for the formulation of design standards. Streets with high accident rates have been examined more closely to work out correlations between the supply of cycle tracks and the nature of the accidents. typical accident situations can be used as the basis to suggest planning provisions that are suited to reduce accident risks for cyclists. Furthermore, it is shown that the traffic conflict technique can be applied to describe the quality of cycle traffic and be used to explore accident prone situations. In conclusion, the limits and weaknesses of such an analysis are discussed and points for further research are suggested. (TRRL)" @default.
