- W60994551 abstract "Publisher Summary Intraoperative somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) represent the response of the nervous system to the electrical stimulation of a peripheral nerve. The use of SSEP monitoring during laminectomies can alert the surgeon to failing spinal cord function. The capability to monitor spinal cord function can not only prevent irreversible damage but may also permit more aggressive surgical intervention without fear of harming the patient. This chapter presents the results that confirm the findings of others that SSEP recording is an effective monitor of spinal cord function. In patients, the amplitude never showed a change greater than 30% except for an occasional isolated recording. The latencies of well defined peaks never varied more than 10%. In one case of deliberate transaction, the response to right as well as left tibial nerve stimulation was abolished upon gross assult to the left side of the cord demonstrating the sensitivity of this monitoring technique. Usable SSEPs were obtained even in patients whose preoperative deficit significantly altered the EP. The results indicate that tibial or possibly sural nerve stimulation provides the best stimulation sites in the lower extremities. There is little neurophysiologic basis for these findings as the sural is a sensory nerve whereas the tibial and peroneal are mixed motor/sensory nerves and all are branches of the sciatic nerve." @default.
