- W610045954 abstract "This paper analyses the effects of the deep structural changes in central and eastern Europe on both mobility and traffic in East Germany and Europe. The resulting new challenges for transport are considered. Up to the year 2000, East Germany will have an explosive increase in its number of private cars, and continual and regular growth of car traffic. Individual mobility in East Germany has already increased tremendously, due to the economic and monetary union with West Germany, implemented on 1 July 1990. The demand for its goods transport is rapidly being structurally changed by its new market economy. As a result of these changes, there will be a drastic overload of the road network. Therefore, the following corrective measures are urgently required: (1) an increase in the railways' competitive capacity; () urban and regional planning policies to damp transport demands. The structural change of the East Germany economy, and a dynamic growth of tourism and business travel, will both lead to a fundamental change in the amount and modal split of passenger and goods traffic. Changes in European traffic will include: (1) increasing mobility of central and eastern Europeans; (2) a developing European high speed rail network that will eventually damp individual private traffic; (3) political, economic, demographic, and structural changes in central and eastern Europe that will shift the European mobility centre to the east." @default.
