- W610451834 abstract "Urban planning is determined first by the design that characterizes the stylistic ideas and secondly by the needs of perception and information. Nearly fifty percent of the population needs in some stages of their lives better contrast marking in the public area. And nearly everybody would profit by improved visual information, taking into account: contrast, luminance, color and appropriate size of objects. How it works is exemplified in a study financed by the State Government of North Rhine Westfalia for a pedestrian area in Bonn, Germany. Special attention is given to the sidewalk: color of the stones to reflect the light, the street furniture as there are bancs, flower basket, trees. One has to keep in mind that an optimum of luminance is better than a maximum. Visual contrasts should be accompanied by tactile information. Improved visual information is differentiated according to three priorities within a scale between 1 (highest contrast) and 0 (no contrast); (1) danger, warning; contrast above 0.8; (2) decisive functions contrast above 0.5 e.g. street names, time tables; and (3) leading functions contrast above 0.3 recognition of a continuing path. Further supporting elements are (1) borderlines, for separating different areas, for example cross sections; (2) accompanying lines to mark e.g. shopping zones; (3) surrounding contrasting marks around obstacles; and (4) increasing levels of the floor in dangerous zones of danger. Improved visual information is a question of life quality and question of safe mobility and means more comfort for all." @default.
