- W610642023 abstract "In this article, the project director for tunnel construction with German Railways (DB) describes the context in which a large expansion of the high-performance German rail network is in progress, and the tunnelling work on the Koln-Rhein/Main high-speed rail link. The article includes a route map showing the locations and lengths of the most important tunnels, and a similar route map of the Koln-Rhein/Main link. The new German rail network consists of: (1) the priority network, linking the main economic areas by two more-or-less parallel and efficient double-track lines, one pair fast, and one pair slower; (2) the performance network, whose lines will be operated in mixed-traffic mode; and (3) the regional network, which will also have links to suburban railways. The Federal Government finances rail investment in accordance with a law for extending federal railways, and establishes the network's step-by-step extension according to a 'plan of demand', which extends this law. The new 219km long Koln-Rhein/Main link has nearly 30 major tunnels and is due to be completed by the end of 2001 and in operation in 2002. The article discusses the geology, design, construction, and shotcrete and concrete linings of its tunnels; most of them are bored, but a few are cut-and-cover." @default.
