- W61099865 abstract "The constant clamor that there is nothing left to say on matters Joycean falls these days on deaf ears. Those who definitely have something to say have been doing so more than ever of late: more books on James Joyce have been published with 1976 and 1977 imprints than during any two previous consecutive years (some admittedly unnecessary). Yet most of the new efforts have, not surprising? ly, carefully avoided grappling with the giant, Finnegans Wake. Until the recent surfacing of the three books under review here (as well as the new Classical Lex? icon), only two books on the Wake have appeared since the beginning of the seventies. These three studies represent three different generations of Wakesmiths (generations now tumble upon each other more quickly than ever owing to the ac? celeration of time and creation of gaps). Adaline Glasheen personifies a genera? tion that did its mining with its bare hands. Her first Census in 1956 was the first reference tool of value, and in its expanded second edition remains the primary source of basic information: there are few explicators who do not automatically reach for it when confronting Wake problems. Roland McHugh is a phenomenon of the sixties, spurred on by the new frontier of the notebooks and notesheets, whose work has appeared primarily in A Wake Newslitter (the bibliography at the end of Sigla details his publications there). And Margot Norris is a product of the new decade, conscious of the new theories affecting recent criticism, especially emanating from France. Together this disparate trio have shoved Finnegans Wake scholarship a good step forward. Evaluating Glasheen's Third Census this early is presumptuous. Until we have worked with it for years its strengths and weaknesses do not easily present themselves to the naked eye, but it seems to have all the virtues of the Second Census with compound interest, and an enthusiastic reception seems safe enough. There is no vast advance in size and scope as had marked the difference between Census One and Census Two, which made the first look like a rough draft by comparison, and many frank admissions of impenetrability?signaled by asterisks and question marks?reappear in Census Three.
