- W61136618 abstract "Children are especially vulnerable to particulate matter (PM) air pollution since their respiratory rate is higher and defences against oxidative stress may be impaired. Increased vulnerability to bacterial pneumonia due to exposure to high levels of PM from the burning of biomass fuels is one of the most important global environmental threats to children’s health. Children in the developed world are exposed to lower levels of PM – predominantly from fossil fuel combustion and environmental tobacco smoke. In this population, the association between exposure and vulnerability to bacterial and viral respiratory infection remains poorly defined. The mechanism whereby PM increases vulnerability of respiratory cells to infection is also unclear, but chronic oxidative stress is likely to be involved." @default.
