- W611832379 abstract "The crack opening displacement (COD) technique, theoretically has been postulated to be applicable in characterising fracture of material in the generally yielded as well as linear elastic regimes. In the linear elastic case, it is therefore possible to use the COD method to determine the plane strain fracture toughness, k(sub ic), of a material if the onset of crack propagation can be unambiguously located. In the present investigation, k(sub ic) of a plastic mould steel, Rochling Moulrex A, was determined using 13 mm thick standard compact tension specimens tempered from the as-quenched condition to 500 degrees Celsius. Crack opening displacements at crack initiation, delta(sub i), were evaluated for the material at identical heat treatment conditions with 10 mm thick by 20 mm wide 3-point bend specimens using the load-unload extrapolation technique. It is found that by using analysis in accordance to BS 5762:1979, the linear elastic k(sub ic) values were grossly overestimated under all tempered conditions studied. The use of a constant rotational factor as suggested in the standard test is observed to be inadequate. Under small scale yielding, the centre of rotation is located at only a small distance away from the crack tip. Calculations revealed that this distance is approximately in the same order as the stretched zone size. From the investigation, however, it is believed that due to uncertainties involved in the analysis, the COD method of fracture toughness determination is cumbersome and lacking in accuracy, (Author/TRRL)" @default.
