- W612608544 abstract "Soil-tripped rollovers constitute a large percentage of rollover accidents, however there is little information in the literature about the mechanics of soil-tripped rollovers. In this chapter, from a comprehensive text on occupant and vehicle responses in rollovers, the authors report on a series of tests that focused on understanding the mechanics of soil-tripped rollovers. The tests were conducted at varying speeds (13 mph to 42 mph) with the same mid-1980's vintage vehicle to determine the minimum trip speed, to develop an understanding of the forces created by wheels furrowing through soil, and to examine the influence of vehicle speed on soil-tripped rollover. The authors conclude that in order for a vehicle to rollover in soil, the forces generated by the furrowing process must be maintained at a high enough level for long enough that the vehicle reaches a roll angle where the trailing wheels leave the ground and the roll angular velocity is sufficient to continue to roll the vehicle once the furrowing process ends. In these tests, at speeds below 23 mph, the furrowing forces were not maintained long enough to result in rollover." @default.
