• W612634905 abstract "Partitioning and transmutation of plutonium, americium, and curium is inevitable if radiotoxic inventory of spent nuclear fuel is to be reduced by more than a factor of 100. This incineration process is envisioned to be carried out in specially designed dedicated reactors (critical or sub-critical) operating in a double-strata reactor park. In the frame of a design work named the Sing-Sing Core (SSC), we introduce burnable absorbers into the core of an accelerator-driven sub-critical burner. We show that thanks to the rather hard neutron spectrum obtained in absorber (B 4C) shielded zones, the fission fraction ratios of even neutron numbered americium and curium nuclides can be increased by more than a factor of two. Hence, thanks to the reduced helium production, burnups and fuel residence times in the core can be prolonged. We have optimized the distribution of transuranics, depleted uranium and burnable absorbers in the core lattice such that power peakings at the beginning of life can be virtually eliminated. The choice of nitride fuels has allowed to reach linear power ratings more than two times higher compared to those typical for oxide fuels while usage of lead-bismuth eutectics as reactor coolant only partially mitigates adverse effects of burnable poisons on coolant reactivity void worth. At the same time, fuel temperature coefficient remains still weak, in spite of the presence of depleted uranium. Finally, we illustrate that core transmutation characteristics can be further improved when americium and curium are placed in outer core zones with high content of burnable absorbers. We also introduce two distinct definitions of source neutron multiplication and show that neutron source efficiency can be somewhat improved if depleted uranium is replaced by zirconium nitride in the innermost core zones." @default.
