- W613503774 abstract "parameters as the transfer function, loop gain, loop bandwidth, natural frequency, loop damping factor, and the stability of the first- and second-order loops. (Third-order loops are also mentioned. Special emphasis is placed on giving physical meaning to these parameters. The performance of the loop (phase-error variation and mean time to first cycle slip) is then determined for the linear (small error) loop and is discussed for nonlinear loops.) Next, the tracking behavior of a locked loop for small error, as well as the conditions under which the loop loses lock are determined. Transient and steady-state error behavior is well documented with charts and illustrations compiled from different sources. Bringing the loop into lock, or acquisition, is the subject of Chapter 5. Both self-acquisition and aided acquisition of the phase and frequency are discussed. The lock-in, hold-in, and pull-in ranges are defined and some numerical results of their limits are presented. Due to the complexity of the loop analysis in the acquisition mode, the discussion is mainly heuristic and provides the reader mostly with insight. Chapter 6 deals with the hardware realization aspect of the components of the phase-locked loops and their relationship to ideal components postulated by the theory. Different practical circuits are analyzed, and the reader is provided with the often missing part of manufacturers’ literature on the advantages and limitations of their circuits (especially in the presence of noise). Optimization of loop performance (selection of best loop bandwidth damping factor and transfer function) is summa-‘ rized in Chapter 7. The important point made here is that different criteria lead to different optimum systems. Phase-locked receivers, transponders, modulators, and demodulators are examined in Chapters 8 and 9. The effects of narrow-band IF filters on the noise performance and stability of the loop are discussed. Very disturbing effects caused by narrow IF bandwidth (such as false lock and sideband lock) are mentioned, again providing the insight and understanding of the problem. Evaluation of phase-locked loops as demodulators is mainly based on the traditional criteria: SNR (FM improvement factor) and threshold (click rate); the important practical implication of input and output filters is included in the evaluation. The discussion is largely qualitative, and some experimental data curves of the loop natural frequency damping and click rate (second order loops) are shown. Chapter 10 explores locked oscillators and various synthesizer configurations. The approach to evaluating them is qualitative and at times quite simplified. My feeling is that the author has included this topic in the book only for completeness, referring his readers to,the references for more detail. The last chapter of the book addresses the problem of data clock waveforms regeneration from the digitally modulated carrier. Unfortunately, the derivations in his analysis are at times oversimplified. The effects of noise and the nonlinear operations performed by the loop on the signal and noise are only briefly mentioned (detailed derivation is, however, shown in Appendix B). The available design parameters (SNR, arm filter bandwidth) that can be used to optimize suppressed carrier regenerators are cursorily mentioned and the proof is left to the" @default.
