- W613620026 abstract "This article describes how a partnership approach between the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) , industry, and academia lead to the successful rehabilitation of the Long Beach Freeway in California. The project involved rebuilding approximately 1,730 lane-miles of deteriorated freeway on I-710. The goals included using pavements with design lives of thirty plus years with negligible maintenance, as well as employing fast-track construction techniques in order to minimize traffic disruption. In order to make sure that the pavement could withstand the heavy loads on the freeway, pavement materials were tested at the University of California, Berkeley. The perpetual pavement concept was used as the design process. It included a rich bottom layer for fatigue resistance and compactability, an intermediate layer designed for stability, a surface layer for rut resistance, and an open-graded friction course (OGFC) to reduce hydroplaning, splash, spray, and noise. Despite being faced with various obstacles and traffic challenges, the project required eight weekends of freeway closure, two weekends less than originally anticipated." @default.
