New York, NY: Ferguson 158 pages, $35.00, Hardback Intended Audience(s): A, B, H Major Headings from the Table of Contents: Are You Cut Out for a Career in Media; How to Use This Book; Job Profiles; Appendix A: Associations, Organizations, and Web Sites; Appendix B: Online Career Resources; Read More About It How Is the Book Most Useful for Its Intended Audience? Consideration and exploration of unique and nontraditional jobs. The Top Five Things You Learned from Reading this Book: Nontraditional jobs that can be made into a career Related skills of unusual jobs Legitimate nature of horoscopes Organizations to contact to research unusual jobs Suggested career paths of unique jobs Extraordinary Jobs in Media is one book in a series of 12 volumes by Alecia T. Devantier and Carol A. Turkington. Each volume explores odd, unusual, or extraordinary jobs in different fields that include: Adventurers, Agriculture and Nature, Animals, Creative People, Entertainment, Food Industry, Government, Health and Science, Leisure, Media, Service sector, and Sports. Each volume is hardcover and features several representative pictures on the cover. On the Media volume cover is a large picture of a photojournalist hanging precariously off the side of a helicopter, as well as three smaller photos of a radio personality, camera operator, and news reporter. All of the volumes are structured in the same manner. After listing the Contents and Acknowledgements, each volume proceeds with the Are You Cut Out for a Career in...section and then How To Use This Book. Both sections are very valuable for inspiring interest to investigate these careers and also very practical in the sense of providing advice and encouragement. In the Are You Cut Out for a Career in... section, the authors offer some reality advice both for the individual aspects of each career that may be challenging at times and also for the internal voices that one may hear about preconceived notions of particular jobs and messages picked up from parents, peers, and teachers. At times the individual may want the glamorous or romantic vision of the job whereas parents may strive to guide a person into more normal jobs. The authors advise that at times, when you pursue your dream, it will not be easy but the lifetime of satisfaction will be the reward for not compromising the dream. The authors make the reader aware that often we limit ourselves by these internal messages. They encourage the readers to look into themselves and become aware of and challenge the shoulds that may create stumbling blocks to career success. Like Albert Ellis and Rational Emotive Therapy, the authors note that being happy requires tough choices that at times may puzzle the important people in an individual's life. But by not confronting the irrational shoulds, they warn that you could have a lifetime of normal work but grow old regretting your choices and having avoided taking chances at the expense of happiness. Each volume begins with the very positive advice to explore and pursue one's dream. The How To Use This Book section is energetic and positive, and attempts to grab the reader's attention by connecting to a sense of wonderment and exploration of jobs that may be seen as off the beaten path. For example, many may have considered a career as reporter but how many consider helicopter reporter as their career or educational goal? Practical, clear advice in the book attempts to dispel rumors and show the way toward a greater understanding of these unusual jobs. I would like to note that the words students and kids are used several times. I do believe these volumes are excellently suited for use by high school and college career guidance professionals. I found these sections to be informative and important for inspiring interest and motivation to continue to explore the book. …" @default.
