- W614129622 abstract "Grain amaranth, Amaranthus cruentus L., is a potential alternative crop for midwestern agriculture. One of the insect pests most commonly found in large numbers on amaranth plantings is the tarnished plant bug (TPB), Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beau vois). A greenhouse study was conducted to determine the distribution of the eggs of TPB laid on the amaranth plant. Three growth stages (4 wk, 6 wk, and 8 wk) of a grain amaranth cultivar, Amaranthus cruentus L., 'RRC-10H', were tested. Results show that the TPB preferred to oviposit on heads (inflorescence), but leaves were preferred over stems when heads were not available. When using leaves as an oviposition site, the TPB prefers the petiole, and the midrib is second in preference. Two-thirds to three-fourths of the eggs laid on leaves were laid on those two parts. Tarnished plant bug (TPB), Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois) has been recorded on 328 hosts in the United States. Of these, 130 are considered eco nomically important. TPB are found on 21 of the 30 most important crops in the United States (Young, 1986). In another survey, Snodgrass et al. (1984) found TPB on 169 host plant species in the Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi delta. Seven species of amaranth, Amaranthus spp., were listed. Fye (1980) collected L. hesperus Knight and L. elisus Van Duzee on pigweed, A. retroflexus L., in Yakima Valley and Columbia Basin in Washington. He believed these and other weeds to be major reproductive sites in late season and hosts of the potential overwin tering populations. Little is known regarding the relationship of Lygus spp. to grain amaranth, A. cruentus L., in the United States. Kauffman and Reider (1983), in describing the amaranth germplasm collection at the Rodale Research Center (Kutztown, PA), stated that TPB was the most severe insect problem. In addition, the 1988 Ama ranth Grain Production Guide (Weber et al., 1988) listed the TPB as the most prevalent insect infesting grain amaranths. Robinson (1986) stated that lygus bugs and flea beetles were the only insects that caused noticeable damage to his research plots at Rosemount, Minnesota. He believed the sucking insects probably reduced yield by feeding on the immature seeds. No information is available regarding oviposition sites of lygus bugs on grain amaranth. There are a few references to other species of Lygus and their preferred oviposition sites on other plant species. For example, L. hesperus preferred to oviposit on leaves of cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., where 68 to 97% of all eggs were deposited. The leaf petiole had from 64 to 80% of all eggs deposited.
