- W615012310 abstract "Miller, Melanie, M.S. Forestry Shrub sprouting response to fires in a Douglas-fir/western larch ecosystem (124 pp.) The use of prescribed fire as a management tool in northern Rocky Mountain forests is increasing. Little quantitative information is available relating fire characteristics to the effects of f ire on shrubs. The role which shrubs play after fire is extremely important, since newly regenerated shrubs take up released nutrients, inhibiterosion, provide wildlife forage and can offer significant competition to newly established tree seedlings. The effects which f ire has on shrub communities should be considered when preparing fire-management guidelines. Mean comparison testing and multiple l inear regression were used to analyze shrub data collected before, and 1 and 2 years after 20 prescribed fires in Douglas-fir/western larch stands in western Montana. Both spring and fall fires increased the diversity in the shrub community. Fire-pruned plants continued to sprout for at least 2 years. Sprouting of Vaccinium globulare was apparently controlled by the intensity and duration of f ire heating. There was no evidence of seasonal variation in the physiological abili ty of Vaccinium to produce sprouts. The quantity of heat released by the fire and the amount of duff and soil moisture were the factors most important in controlling the number and distribution of pruned sites on stems and rhizomes of Vaccinium. Fall f ires resulted in greater heat release and deeper heat penetration into duff and soil layers than spring fires. Rhizome mortality resulted in the temporary elimination of Vaccinium on many more data quadrats after fall burns than after spring burns. Director: Robert W. Steele" @default.
