- W615968617 abstract "This article describes PARK(ing) Day, an annual, one-day global event where artists, activists and citizens collaborate to temporarily transform city parking spots into miniature public parks. Begun in San Francisco (California, United States), the event was originally designed as a creative exploration of how urban public space is allocated and used. By putting coins into the parking meters, activists lease the parking spot real estate for the day. In place of parking a private car, artists and activists create welcoming places to sit, relax, or have a meal. This article shows pictures from Cape Town's (South Africa) celebration of PARK(ing) Day and describes how this event could be one small step toward moving away from a dependence on private automobiles.
