- W616280314 abstract "hen many years ago, I met Quine's idea that reality is reality VV conceptualised by us, my own philosophising started. In one sense, sure, this philosophical insight?as many other philosophical insights are?is rather trivial. However, the tricky question is, what conclusions could reasonably be drawn from it, also concerning the field of religion. This is the philosophical problem area from which I will try to approach the question of whether or not religion can be democratic. Certainly, there are elements in the ways of life in all religions that are not only undemocratic but outspokenly antidemocratic. So, what to do? Needless to say, this paper's response has to be fairly sketchy. One of the characteristics of religion is that it is about the whole human person. It concerns all relationships, to one's self, other people, other living beings, nature, and the whole universe. As long as this allows that different people have different religious views, it need not become problematic. It will, however, definitely be a problem if religions?and their secular counterparts, too, for that matter?raise the claim to offer the very truth about all this. A religious (or secular) view of life making such a claim to the truth will probably reason according to the following line: Since there cannot be more than one all encompassing truth, the truth claims of all other religions and ideologies either must be seen as parts of one's own truth or?if that is not possible?must be false. This is not only a theoretical problem. Since views of life are not only systems of dogmas, creeds, and teachings but also offer a way of living; views of life with claims to the absolute truth more often than not tend to become totalitarian and thus" @default.
