• W617010028 abstract "The growing diffusion of wideband Internet access is one of the factors likely to increase the attraction of B2C e-commerce over the next few years, making it probable that use of online shopping will expand considerably. This paper reports on the results of an investigation, carried out as part of the ROSETTA project, which aims to assess the transport implications. More specifically, the objective was to identify ITS applications that could favor the growth of e-commerce, while helping to avoid negative effects on transport. It describes proposals for the development of open platforms to provide support in optimizing the logistics of e-commerce operations. This paper reports on the results of a review carried out as part of the ROSETTA project (funded by the European Commission)(1). The aim of the project is to encourage the effective and timely implementation of transport telematics in Europe through: (a) an assessment of the results of research in the ITS field within and outside Europe; (b) the identification of 'gaps' and hence future research required; and (c) the clarification of actions needed on the part of government and industry. The ROSETTA project recognizes that the way in which we live, work and travel is being affected by major changes which require radical new approaches to how we tackle the transportation of goods and people. One of the fundamental keys to progress is seen to be the development and deployment of technological solutions. In the transport field, it is felt that ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) can offer valuable potential in facilitating future personal travel and freight movement. ROSETTA is examining a number of areas which have a pan-European dimension and require a clear vision for future policy. One of these is 'online shopping' or B2C e-commerce.
