- W617317192 abstract "Peculiar factors in the climate and environment, material and geology, workmanship and others cause cracks to tend to progress more rapidly in the Middle East than in other areas. The authors have studied the early age performance of concrete structures in order to predict their middle and long term behaviour. Simple techniques have been developed whereby accurate dated maps are plotted from a combination of relatively simple procedures. Case histories are given to illustrate the various techniques. The work consists of two phases, one covering the actual mapping, and the other sampling and testing and measurement on site. The exact sampling and testing required is decided in principle from the initial brief evaluation, and then worked out in more detail during the first phase. Field procedures for mapping and observation are discussed, and the recommended steps and observations are explained with examples. The development of well known crack patterns is examined and examples are given of investigations into the more serious types. The proper classification of destructive progressive crack patterns is important in deciding on remedial means. The most frequently occurring and destructive type of progressive cracking in the middle east is that due to corrosion of reinforcement. (TRRL)" @default.
