- W617439629 abstract "Generally the coastline of Malaysia consists of two widely different physical formations: the mangrove- and nipah-fringed mud banks, and the sandy beaches. While mud predominates the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, the most common shore material on the east coast is sand. The coast of East Malaysia has both types fairly evenly distributed. While the mechanism of coastal erosion along a mud coast is less understood, the mud coasts are also those that are most extensively reclaimed/developed for agriculture. On the other hand, the land use on sandy shore is primarily recreation-based. With the backdrop of the different shore type and land use mentioned above, the paper recounts the experience of the Drainage & Irrigation Department in addressing the problem of coastal erosion. For this purpose the coastlines of the States of Selangor and Terengganu are selected as being typical of a muddy coast and a sandy shore respectively in Malaysia." @default.
