- W61744516 abstract "A survey of the variety of systems in which non-photochemical hole-burning (NPHB) has been observed will be presented in Sect.5.2. In keeping with the spirit of the discussion in Sect.5.1, it should be recognized that in many of the examples cited, the nonphotochemical nature of the holes has not been rigorously proven. Section 5.3 will evaluate and compare the numerous theories which have been advanced to explain dephasing. In Sect.5.4, the density of states for the characteristic two-level system (TLS) will be discussed. A correct expression for this quantity is at the heart of explaining the anomalous optical dephasing of impurities in amorphous solids. Although early work indicated that non-photochemically produced holes were persistent for hours or days if maintained at the burn temperature Tb, as data for more systems have been obtained, a number of hole-filling mechanisms have been identified. In Sect.5.5, the various phenomena, particularly laser-induced hole filling, are examined. Section 5.6 briefly summarizes several very recent developments. A discussion of NPHB mechanisms for vibrational excitations in the infrared is contained in Chap.6." @default.
