- W617580700 abstract "There is an increasing recognition of the transformative nature of work and thatindividuals are changed by the work they do with survivors of trauma. For mental healthprofessionals these changes could be both positive and negative. The present study engagesin a qualitative exploration of the impact of working with survivors of trauma. Morespecifically it examines the professional and private experience of twelve mental healthpractitioners in their work with survivors of in the on-going conflict situation andpost-disaster setting of Sri Lanka. The aim is to provide some insight into ourunderstanding of the psychological processes which determine and maintain effectivecoping strategies when working with survivors of trauma. Very little qualitative researchhas been carried out in this area, with most research investigating moderating factors inrelation to secondary trauma using survey questionnaires and psychometric scales. Semistructuredin-depth interviews were carried out with twelve native mental healthprofessionals who had worked long-term with survivors of in Sri Lanka. The dataanalysis followed the theoretical principles of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis(IPA). The main analytic focus was to look at the meaningfulness of work for theparticipants from different perspectives. A second analytic focus was to explore someaspects of the social constructedness of the participants' 'talk' about work. The fourmaster themes that emerged collectively showed how working with survivors of isconceptualised and experienced. The complexity of these factors is illustrated by variousdialectical processes that seem to be in action in work. Each of the four themes isalso examined with respect to the use of discourses and practices located within specificsocial, cultural, historical, political and ideological contexts. These findings highlight theimportance of raising awareness of the potentiality of both secondary trauma and theopportunities for growth through adversity. The strategic role of reflective practice, selfcareand supervision are discussed with respect to their implication for CounsellingPsychology. This study also considers the value of taking an authentic psycho-socialframework with a focus on the wider realities of social and cultural dynamics." @default.
