- W618974775 abstract "The aim is to develop an analytical method of design for unbound granular pavements based on more realistic strength characterisation tests simulating the stress environment in the pavement layer under actual traffic loads. Three types of graded unbound pavement materials for road base specification have been tested. These are: (1) an open grading taken from the lower limit of the dtp's grading from specification for road and bridge works, (2) an intermediate fuller's grading, and (3) a dense grading to lees' design method. The aggregate types studied in these gradings have included six of the most common types of granular materials; namely, samples of artificially produced aggregates such as brick ballast and slag and of naturally occurring aggregates such as gravel, limestone, granite, basalt, etc. The experimental study has been carried out in an improved dynamic bearing mould placed on an instron machine, allowing the cyclic application of axial stress. Surcharge weights are kept constant within a test but can be varied between tests. While there is no attempt to apply cyclic variations in confining stress, the variations in axial stress are assumed to produce a similar cyclic response in the confining stress as occurs in the field condition. No estimate of this response has been made. Axial and radial strain measurements upon the samples have been made. Experimental results have been analysed in terms of resilient modulus and permanent deformation modulus.
