- W61918095 abstract "A pressure vessel has been designed and constructed, following principles similar to those used by Bridgman, which enables pressures of 30,000 to 34,000 kg/cm/sup 2/ to be reached. An internal heater is incorporated which will heat gases to 15OO deg C and liquids to 6OO deg C. Methods of measuring the temperature, pressure, and heat of transformation in the vessel have been developed. The internal volume of the working space is 10 to 20 cm/sup 3/. The pressure is measured from the resistance of a manganin coil and the temperature by a differential thermocouple to + O.5 deg . The latter works betwoeen the hot specimen and the massive base plug of the chamber, the temperature of which is measured by an external thermocouple to 0.1 C. Six leads enter the working chamber. The variation of m.p. with pressure was measured for Cu, Al, Sb, Zn, Pb, Cd, Tl, and Sn up to 32,000 kg/cm/sup 2/ for all but Cu for which the limit was 17,000 kg/cm/sup 2/ at which temperature the m.p. was 1155 deg C. The polymorphic transformations of P and Bi were investigated, and the phase diagram for the latter was completed by the addition of themore » boundaries between the BETA -phase and the liquid and the gamma -phase and the liquid. For the remainder of the diagram the author's data agreed closely with those of Bridgman. Black crystalline phospborus was investigated up to 20,000 kg/cm/sup 2/ and 12OO deg C but no new phase was found. On compressing red phosphorus a new modification was observed above 40,000 kg/cm/sup 2/ and 6OO deg C which transformed reversibly with a very small thermal effect. (TCO)« less" @default.
