- W619910759 abstract "Within the limits of the cycle planning in Stockholm a number of systematical observations of route choice of cyclists and behaviour otherwise have also been made. The results shed light on the fact that the bicycle traffic neither is motor-vehicle traffic (which demands roadways) nor pedestrian traffic (which demands foot-paths) but it is a third traffic element. The bicycle traffic demands cycle tracks. A detached network of park-streets that is planned as a network of foot-paths is not acceptable as a network of foot-paths and cycle tracks. When an intersection is worked out, the bicycle traffic has to be considered as motor-vehicle traffic. The cyclists have to follow the traffic signals of motor vehicle or bicycle and not the traffic signals of pedestrians. On the distance between the intersections cyclists often are brought together with pedestrians on a common lane. The cyclists are then considered pedestrians. One has to remember that the speed of the cyclists is much higher. The cyclists are an unprotected group of road-users that is very sensitive to differences in altitude, detours and unnecessary stops. This demands great accuracy in details and capacity of feeling insight in the situation of the cyclists. (TRRL)" @default.
