• W620593773 abstract "This report presents the findings of two traffic load surveys, one conducted during April 1988 and the other during December 1989. Both surveys were conducted on the Queensland Warrego Highway outer lane pavement test sections of ARRB's Pavement Performance Task. The equipment used was the Golden River Weigh-in-Motion Device (GRWIMD), which is a fully automatic, highway speed, portable capacitance pad weighing system. The surveys' duration were such that the Average Weekend Day Traffic was estimated from the April 1988 survey data and the Average Workday Traffic was estimated from the December 1989 survey data. The December 1989 Average Workday Traffic data were then used to compare the accuracy of the three traffic estimation methods given in the AUSTROADS Pavement Design Guide. The April 1988 Average Weekend Day Traffic (AWDT) and December 1989 Average Workday Traffic (AWT) were found to be 1626 and 3885 vehicles, respectively. The percent commercial vehicles calculated for the April 1988 AWDT and December 1989 AWT are 15 and 25, respectively. Method (i) in the AUSTROADS Pavement Design Guide, which used the most detailed data, gave the best value estimate of 1060 ESAs. Method (ii) gave an estimated value of 1139 ESAs while Method (iii) estimated the initial workday traffic to be 1068 ESAs. The comparison exercise demonstrates that for Warrego Highway outer lane the three initial traffic estimation methods produced very similar results. Similar comparison exercises conducted on other pavement test sections concluded that the more detailed the given traffic data, the better estimate of the initial traffic. The consistency in equivalent standard axle values in this case might be due to the assumed average Australia-wide axle load distribution used in the AUSTROADS Guide being similar to the axle load distribution of Warrego Highway outer lane. In light of these and past results it is recommended that the factors affecting the accuracy of the three AUSTROADS Guide traffic estimation methods be investigated. (Author/TRRL)" @default.
