- W62070251 abstract "Lassa fever virus is associated with outbreaks of Lassa hemorrhagic fever, a zoonotic disease. The virus is an arenavirus and belongs to a genus in the arenaviridae family. This enveloped ribonucleic acid virus causes a persistent, asymptomatic infection in the rodent vector Mastomys natalensis, commonly found in Sub Saharan Africa but with severe symptoms in humans. The disease is contracted by the consumption of food contaminated with excretions and secretions of infected rodents or eating raw or undercooked meat of infected rats. Others are through aerosol inhalation or by blood contact with infected individuals or materials. Infection in man is characterized by pathologies of various organs and systems. Lassa fever, an endemic disease in the West African subregion, has been reported in other parts of the continent. Approximately 300 000–500 000 cases, with 5000 deaths occur annually in West Africa alone. Through international travels, the disease has been exported to other parts of the world. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, indirect fluorescent-antibody, and polymerase chain reaction techniques are employed to confirm diagnosis of Lassa fever. Manipulation of materials suspected to harbor Lassa virus must be in a biosafety cabinet. Isolation of patients, barrier nursing, contact tracing, and adequate disposal of infectious wastes must be enforced to control Lassa fever spread. Vector control and good hygienic practice can prevent the outbreaks." @default.
