- W621090997 abstract "Since 1989, there has been a considerable reduction in deaths and injuries on Victorian and New South Wales roads. In Victoria, studies have shown that these large reductions can be attributed to the implementation of various road safety programs which were introduced, and to the downturn in the economy. A need has been identified to continually monitor the effectiveness of numerous road trauma countermeasures recently introduced and being considered for introduction in Victoria. Thus an on-going system has been established that gathers and analyses data to monitor and evaluate countermeasures. To undertake a valid evaluation of the effects of new countermeasures on road trauma, there was a need to gain a good understanding of the ways in which other factors affect trends in road crashes. The crashes were disaggregated into ten strata representing various road user groups and regions of the state and then modelled using log-linear regression methods. The results from the ten strata were then aggregated into a single statewide model. A similar study was undertaken for the Road Safety Bureau of the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority to provide a better understanding of the impact of the various road safety programs and the economy on the NSW road toll. This discussion aims to examine the results achieved in the studies mentioned above as well as consider the methodological differences in modelling crashes at a general level or at more specific disaggregated levels.
