- W62329770 abstract "This chapter focuses on the skepticism of human mind that concerns whether scientists have adequate reasons for the beliefs or not. The skepticism problem is itself defective on the ground that either the skeptical problem rests on disputable or unnatural theoretical presuppositions, or that the very posing of the “problem” is subtly incoherent. This chapter reviews a variety of skepticism related to self-knowledge. A certain way of thinking about skepticism—the type of problem that it is, and the way one should respond to it—has gone missing in the focus of many contemporary discussions of skepticism. One must turn if one wants to recover this way of thinking. Thinking about skepticism in general and modern skepticism in particular is very largely conditioned by the understanding of Descartes' attitude to skepticism as exemplified by the figure of the mediator. This ideal of what a philosophical response to skepticism should aim for is one shared by refuters and quietists alike, even in spite of their differences." @default.
