- W62347421 abstract "Publisher Summary The effects of stress, and the neuroendocrine responses to stress, on immunity and pathogenesis during infection is a current area of research. Stress is defined as a state of altered homeostasis resulting from an external or an internal challenge, or a stressor. The mammalian response to a stressor involves a variety of adaptive neuroendocrine mechanisms designed to restore homeostasis. Neuroendocrine responses vary with the nature and severity of the stressor but are mediated by products of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). Physiologic responses to stressors are mediated by glucocorticoids, which are released into the circulation from the adrenal cortex in response to adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which is secreted by the anterior pituitary gland in response to corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) of hypothalamic origin. Physiologic and behavioral stressors trigger the secretion of glucocorticoids through the HPA axis pathway. Through specific intracellular receptors, glucocorticoids mediate adaptive metabolic, cardiovascular, and anti-inflammatory effects under conditions of acute stress." @default.
