- W623488506 abstract "Pedestrian fatalities constitute about 11% of the total 43,000 annual automotive fatalities in the recent years. This proportion has remained relatively constant since 2000 while the total number of fatalities has reduced since 1995. The Pedestrian Crash Data Study (PCDS) was implemented by NHTSA as part of the Crashworthiness Data System (CDS) for the years 1994 to 1998 and focused on crashes of late model year vehicles impacting pedestrians. In this study, the 552 cases contained in PCDS was further filtered using SAS to ensure availability of information on gender, age, vehicle type, speed limit, and the impact speed with an accuracy of ± 3 km/h. This paper presents the results of the analysis of the filtered PCDS data to demonstrate the relationship between the impact speed of a vehicle and the risk of serious injury to the pedestrian. An injury with a Maximum Abbreviated Injury Scale (MAIS) value of 3 or greater is considered ‘serious’. The analysis shows a unique pattern whereby a constant risk value for serious injury are seen for speed ranges of 15-25 km/h and 35-45 km/h. The risk value varies from 20% to 60% for these two speed ranges, respectively. This clearly indicates that reducing the speed limit in pedestrian crossings to 25 km/h may have a very significant effect on reducing risk of serious injury and subsequently fatality." @default.
