- W623933232 abstract "This essay from a book on the communalization of womens sexuality in South Asia discusses the recovery of women abducted in the aftermath of the 1947 partition of India to create Pakistan and presents three perspectives on the recovery operation carried out by the Government of India between 1948 and 1956. The introduction notes that the partition was accompanied by a terrible violence inflicted upon women by outsiders and by members of their own families and that defining features of identity (community religion and nationality) can be seen in a new light through a gendered narrative of the displacement and dispossession that occurred. It is proposed that the entire recovery operation was determined by a construction of the identity of the abducted women that raises doubts about Indias claims of being a secular and democratic state. The first section of the chapter provides an historical sketch of the massive movement of refugees attendant upon the announcement of the Hindustan-Pakistan Plan as well as the unforeseen violence they suffered (fears of abduction led women to commit suicide or to be killed by their own families to avoid dishonor). This chapter also reviews official policy statements and legislative actions taken by the government of India. The second section provides an overview of the profile and experiences of abducted women and exposes as false the claim that rescue was necessary to restore the abducted women to an honorable life. Accounts are presented from a social worker employed to recover women even against their will a women who was recovered and a woman who was located but refused recovery. Section 3 details the problems faced by recovered women especially those who were pregnant or had children. The essay ends by exploring why issues of national honor were linked to the recovery of abducted women and efforts to reinforce legitimate family ties." @default.
