- W624408575 abstract "Green Bay is the largest embayment of the North American great lake, Lake Michigan, the sixth-largest lake in the world. The bay is 190 km long, 37 km in mean width, and has an area of approximately 4,000 km2. Its most significant tributary is the Fox River, which has a high mean flow rate (125 m3/ sec) and a heavy load of dissolved and particulate materials. It enters Green Bay at its extreme southern end. The transport and dispersion of these substances result in a gradient of trophic conditions ranging from a hypereutrophic extreme southern part to oligo-mesotrophic characteristics in the northern bay. These conditions have a major impact on the abundance and species composition of the zooplankton community and its ability to control phytoplankton species composition and biomass. Species comparisons show that the composition of the zooplankton shifts from small-sized cladocerans and cyclopoid copepods in the lower and mid-bay regions to larger-sized Daphnia and calanoid copepod species in the upper bay. Furthermore, zooplankton/phytoplankton biovolume ratios and zooplankton fecundity in relation to phytoplankton biovolume are significantly greater in the upper bay region as compared to lower and mid-bay regions. These differences are related to the effectiveness of in situ zooplantkton community grazing, which shows that larger herbivorous zooplankton and higher phytoplankton food quality in the upper bay result in the highest grazing rates and phytoplankton control." @default.
