- W624458156 abstract "April 22 is the 45th annual Earth Day, May is National Bike Month, and May 6 is the fourth annual National Bike to School Day (see On the web). If there are safe bicycle routes to your high school, now is a good time to encourage students to make biking to school a habit. Putting a scientific spin on biking to school is a great way to start. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Your students can assess how biking reduces their carbon compared to driving. According to the Worldwatch Institute, A bicycle commuter who rides four miles to work, five days a week, avoids 2,000 miles of driving and (in the United States) about 2,000 pounds of C[O.sub.2] emissions, each year. This amounts to nearly a 5% reduction in the average American's carbon footprint (Gardner 2010). See On the web for a carbon calculator that can assess the effects of an individual driving to school versus walking or biking, as well as a biking versus driving cost calculator. Your students could also write about one or more aspects of the physics of bicycling, such as stability, leaning while turning to counter centripetal acceleration, bike gears and torque, comparing human energy output, and the efficiencies of running versus biking. Health is another reason for biking to and from school: It helps teens get the daily hour of physical activity they need. Only 47% of U.S. high school students get an hour of physical activity that boosts their heart rate at least five days a week, according to the latest Youth Risk Behavior survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which queried 13,583 high school students in 2013 (CDC 2014, p. 5, 36). Only 27% of high school students are physically active for an hour every day of the week, the survey said (CDC 2014, p. 36). During the past few decades, the number of school children who bike or walk to school has plummeted. This trend may contribute to the United States' current childhood obesity epidemic. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] The Safe Routes to School National Partnership cites federal data that shows 13 of children 5 to 14 years old usually walked or biked to school [in 2009] compared with 48 of students in 1969. Conversely, 12 of children arrived at school by private automobile in 1969, and, by 2009, this number increased to 44 percent (2010). If you decide to encourage bike riding, make sure to mention the importance of wearing a helmet. …" @default.
