- W624504859 abstract "The planning of rehabilitation for pavements can be improved by access to pavement deterioration models (PDM), which will allow the prediction of the serviceability of pavements at some future date. Models currently exist but these are derived for particular pavement sets and, in the main, refer to major road networks, subjected to heavy and frequent axle loads, that are the responsibility of the state road authority (SRA). The models that exist do not detail the deterioration of the various elements of the pavements and the contribution each makes to the deteriorated state. There is another set of roads that are generally very lightly loaded that deteriorate more due to environmental influences rather than from any overload. These are the local government authority (LGA) roads that constitute the major proportion of the road system in Australia. The deterioration models of these pavements, in general, are different from the models for the SRA pavements. The purpose of this paper is to offer some alternatives to the current deterioration models. The models are illustrated by the heavily loaded SRA pavement set in the Western region of Victoria, which carries the interstate freight traffic between Victoria and South Australia, and the lightly loaded LGA pavements in the Eastern portion of the greater Melbourne area.
